On this International Workers’ Day, Alianza Americas, along with our member organizations in Chicago—Cambiando Vidas, Centro Romero, Durango Unido, Illinois Workers in Action, and the Colectivo de Desarrollo Transnacional de Michoacán—raise our voices and march in defense of the rights of migrants, of humanity, and of social justice. This day is a powerful and historic symbol of solidarity and resistance. Despite efforts to diminish its significance, May 1st highlights the importance of coming together, regardless of race, gender, or immigration status, to fight for collective well-being that is fair and equitable. This day remains a reminder that the struggle for workers’ rights is ultimately a struggle for a better world for all.

We are outraged that, as rights-bearing people, our communities continue to be the target of authoritarian and discriminatory policies that threaten our lives, our families, and our collective well-being. The "America First" doctrine promoted by the Trump administration has not only harmed the country and its communities—it has also caused chaos in the global economic and political order.

Today, May 1st, we demand an end to this government’s attacks on immigrants, on diversity, and on the planet itself. Actions that undermine inclusion, equity, and fundamental rights have no place in a society that aspires to justice. Immigrants, regardless of immigration status, are essential and deserve protection, respect, and full access to their rights. On this international day of struggle, we join movements around the world to reaffirm our resistance and our commitment to a society that values and defends all who build it each day with their labor, their social contributions, and their humanity.

Today, our demands are directed at Congress. The constitutional crisis we are experiencing is not only the result of Trump’s regime but also the complicit silence of every member of Congress and every elected official who has chosen not to defend the rights of the people.

Supporting immigrants and protecting our right to well-being is not a difficult decision.
The facts and the narratives are clear: we are essential to this country. A better economic future is only possible when we protect the most vulnerable among us.

Today, May 1st, we make the following demands:

  1. Stop the deportations and the violation of migrant and non-white communities' rights.

Mass deportations and anti-immigrant policies violate human rights and create a climate of fear. These actions damage families and hinder the integration and participation of immigrant communities. Immigration authorities must stop violating rights to fulfill this administration’s political agenda. Enough is enough.

  1. End collaboration between the IRS and DHS.

Sharing data between the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Homeland Security compromises everyone’s privacy and safety—regardless of immigration status. This collaboration fosters fear and discourages immigrants from participating in the tax system. It undermines the integrity of our financial and legal institutions.

  1. No cuts to social programs like Medicare.

Programs like Medicare are essential to the most vulnerable—people with disabilities, low-income individuals, and elderly immigrants. Cutting these programs weakens our social safety net and denies communities access to critical health care. We must protect, not dismantle, care for those most in need.

  1. Full protection for immigrants—regardless of work status.

Immigrants contribute to our economy, communities, and culture—whether or not they are workers. Denying them legal and social protections is unjust and weakens the social fabric of the nation. Dignity and safety are rights for all, not privileges for a few.

Today, we call on Congress to act.
This constitutional crisis is not only the result of the Trump regime but also of the complicit silence from members of Congress who have failed to defend the people. Supporting immigrants and protecting our collective well-being is not a hard decision. The truth is clear: we are essential. A stronger, more equitable future depends on defending the most vulnerable among us.
