Alianza Americas, a network of more than 55 organizations led by immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean, renews its commitment to climate justice on Earth Day, despite the setbacks in climate action we are facing in the United States.
The past 15 months have shown us what it means to have a government that denies the existence of climate change, that repeals environmental and worker protection policies, and that refuses to participate in the international debate. Denying climate change does not make it go away; it only makes us more vulnerable.
All of us living in the United States are suffering the consequences of a government that denies climate change. Governance that reverses the energy transition and prioritizes oil drilling over clean energy initiatives has consequences for the planet, our health, and our wallets. The decision to halt the adoption of a safety standard for workers performing outdoor duties is irresponsible.
The country is falling behind in the energy transition, failing to protect and causing damage to its wildlife, harming our health, and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The United States is moving backward.
Meanwhile, Alianza Americas’ member organizations are working to raise awareness about climate change and its specific impacts on outdoor workers, advocating for climate change to be addressed as a root cause of migration, leading campaigns to educate consumers, tenants, and young people, and advocating for policies that create energy transition opportunities for everyone.
On Earth Day, Alianza Americas invites everyone to continue working and building community power to care for our planet—and, therefore, for our lives. Our Power, Our Planet is a call to recognize that climate justice is vital to our survival and depends on all of us.
