Alianza Americas condemns the decision by the U.S. House of Representatives to approve an additional $70 billion to expand the detention and deportation of immigrants. Families deserve to see their tax dollars invested in health care, education, affordable housing, and safe communities—not in policies that deepen fear and family separation.

This allocation of resources reinforces a strategy that prioritizes fear and persecution over real solutions for an immigration system that dismantles draconian laws that criminalize immigrants, while prioritizing a path to permanent residency and addressing the root causes of migration. Instead of strengthening essential public services and the living conditions of working-class people, lawmakers have chosen to once again pour billions into immigration enforcement.

This decision ignores the growing reports of deaths in custody, inhumane conditions in detention facilities, family separation, and immigration raids that disrupt the lives of workers, students, and people with deep roots in their communities. Providing more funding without meaningful oversight and accountability will only increase the risk of further abuses.

Immigrants are an essential part of the fabric of the United States. Beyond their economic and tax contributions, they enrich the nation's social, cultural, and civic life. Investing public resources in the well-being of people and communities creates safer, healthier, and more prosperous societies.

Alianza Americas calls on elected officials to reject the expansion of a system that spreads fear, destabilizes families, and undermines trust in public institutions. Strong communities are built not through more detention centers, but through investments in opportunity, rights, and collective well-being.
