Chicago, IL. Alianza Americas, a national network of 55+ Latin American and Caribbean immigrant-led organizations, condemns the cruel campaign of persecution and terror waged by the Trump administration against the Haitian community protected under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This decision was made possible by a ruling from the United States Supreme Court, which found no intent to discriminate on racial grounds against Haitians and recognized broad discretion for the administration in its TPS decisions.
Haiti remains an unsafe country for its people to return to, which is why TPS should be maintained, as required by law. Instead of respecting the rule of law, these actions reflect a broader effort to use our immigration system as a tool of persecution, promoting policies based on racism and xenophobia, disregarding due process, and putting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people at risk.
The Secretary of Homeland Security’s decision to terminate TPS for Haiti disregards both the law's intent and the reality facing the country. The U.S. Department of State itself maintains a travel warning advising U.S. citizens not to travel to Haiti due to widespread gang violence, kidnappings, civil unrest, and the collapse of public institutions. TPS is specifically designed to recognize these types of extraordinary conditions, under which individuals should not be deported or forced to return.
More than 300,000 TPS recipients are facing uncertainty, including the loss of their work permits, racial profiling, detention, and the constant threat of deportation. They are our neighbors—healthcare professionals, caregivers for the elderly, workers in the hospitality and restaurant industries, entrepreneurs, mothers, fathers, and community leaders—who for years have contributed to the economic and social development of the United States.
There is no doubt that the actions we are witnessing today against the Haitian people are not intended to improve the administration of immigration policies such as TPS. Nor do they serve the national interest of the United States. What they represent is the implementation of an agenda rooted in racism and white supremacy for partisan political purposes. We call on everyone to stand in solidarity with the Haitian community and to demand that the U.S. Congress not abandon our Haitian neighbors. There is a bill on TPS for Haiti in the Senate, and the petition to pass the Dream and Promise Act needs only 8 more signatures.
