Chicago, IL. As a network of migrant-led organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean in the United States, Alianza Americas believes in the power of fair and free elections as a key component of a healthy democracy. There is undue foreign influence when the actions or statements of foreign heads of state seek to persuade voters to support a particular candidate, or to exert pressure on the vote count.
Democracy in Honduras is fragile, and leaders of other nations should not intervene in its electoral process. The Honduran people have strived to revive their democratic system after the military coup of 2009 that ousted Manuel Zelaya, and the electoral fraud that resulted in the second presidential term of Juan Orlando Hernández. His extradition for drug trafficking crimes, only months after he left office, and his conviction in a federal court of New York highlighted the level of influence and access to power of criminal networks in a small country like Honduras.
Against this historical backdrop, the decision to pardon ex-president Juan Orlando Hernández, along with the U.S. President’s inappropriate remarks endorsing his preferred candidate and commenting on the vote count, causes profound harm to the democracy and sovereignty of Honduras. No foreign agents, furthermore heads of state, should be interfering in the elections of another country.
Alianza Americas condemns the inappropriate meddling of the United States in the elections of another country. The actions of President Trump are harmful to the Honduran people.
