Chicago, IL — On this Tax Day, while millions of people in the United States meet the April 15 deadline to file their taxes, Alianza Americas is launching its “Tax Day 2025: Our Right to Collective Well-Being / Nuestro Derecho al Bien Estar” campaign to spotlight the power of our contributions as immigrants—and the need to build a more tax system that is more just and equitable and addresses the needs of all communities.

Every year, tax season is perceived of as a bureaucratic obligation. However, it is also a reflection of our shared values: an opportunity to ask ourselves how we take care of–or exclude–those who comprise our communities. In 2022 alone, undocumented immigrants it is estimated that undocumented immigrants contributed $96.7 billion in taxes—despite the fact that many of them are denied access to the very public programs they help sustain.

“Our communities deserve to see real returns on our collective contributions in the form of healthcare, education, and economic stability,” said Dulce Guzmán, Executive Director of Alianza Americas.

“Our tax system should be a tool for justice and collective care—not for exclusion or punishment,” said Dulce Guzmán, Executive Director of Alianza Americas. “As immigrants, we contribute every day to the economy, to our communities, and to the future of this country. We deserve a tax system that sees us, respects us, and invests in our well-being,” concluded Guzmán.

A call to transform our fiscal system

Our campaign makes an urgent call on both lawmakers and community members to imagine a just tax system. Among our demands to Congress:

  • End IRS-DHS Collaboration: No more using the tax system to target immigrants.
  • Tax the Wealthy and Large Corporations Fairly: Working families pay their share. So should billionaires.
  • Defund ICE: Stop public funding for the detention and deportation of immigrants.
  • NO cuts to Medicaid in budget reconciliation and to protect Social Security from DOGE's irresponsible actions: No exceptions, no exclusions.
  • Invest in Care: Prioritize children, elders, and people with disabilities.

From April 15 to May 15, Alianza Americas invites community members across its 58-member network to join the campaign. Folks can participate by sharing messages, hosting community conversations, and demanding accountability for how our tax dollars are spent.

On Tax Day, we demand a system that recognizes justice, dignity, and collective well-being for all.
