Alianza Americas, a network of more than 55 organizations led by immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean, celebrates the passage of Bill HR 1689 that requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to designate Haiti for temporary protected status (TPS), in the House of Representatives. It is the result of the courageous work of Congressional Representatives and advocates who have fought tirelessly.
This is not another bill passed in the House. It was introduced by Representative Laura Gillen in February 2025. Representative Ayana Pressley sponsored resolution H.Res.965, a discharge petition, to force the consideration of the Bill by the House. It was a creative strategy that proved successful and attained bipartisan support. Today's vote, which garnered bipartisan support, reflects Congress’ understanding of the compounding crises facing Haiti.
The situation in the country has worsened since TPS was designated for Haiti. There is political instability, economic collapse, rampant gang violence, and the country's inability to rebuild and recover from natural disasters.
The vote of the House of Representatives is historic and reflects its understanding of why TPS for Haiti should be extended. Now, it is up to the Senate to consider the bill and to vote with the same political courage and moral clarity that the House showed today.
Alianza Americas will continue to advocate for TPS as an important policy tool that offers protection in exceptional circumstances. The situation in Haiti merits a TPS designation. We call on the Senate to approve this bill.
