Chicago, IL. Alianza Americas, a network of organizations led by Latin American and Caribbean migrants in the United States, regrets and rejects the inability of Senators and Representatives to prioritize their constituents' needs. The defeat of initiatives presented yesterday in the Senate to alleviate the cost of health insurance leaves people in the United States at the mercy of the market, where rising health plan prices make them unaffordable for millions.
The Affordable Care Act of 2010 represents a first step toward guaranteeing the right to health care. However, this legislation falls short because it maintains a system that operates through health insurance provided by for-profit companies. Without subsidies to purchase insurance policies, many people will be left without medical care.
Alianza Americas calls on citizens and the government to engage in an in-depth discussion about the healthcare system we need to build, one in which people's health and well-being are the goal, and where economic profit does not determine which treatments are covered or how much people have to pay out of pocket to receive the care they need. Health is not a luxury; it is a human right.
We must move toward an equitable and progressive system that does not leave people without the medical treatment they need. The discussion must begin right now. We must start working to create the societies and communities we dream of and not allow ourselves to remain stuck in political squabbles that leave our needs behind.
