Chicago, IL-Alianza Americas, a network of 55+ Latin American and Caribbean immigrant-led organizations, is deeply concerned with the situation of Cuba as a result of the Executive Order issued by the Trump Administration that declares Cuba an unusual and extraordinary threat and thus threatens with tariffs any country that sells or provides oil to it. The immediate consequence of this action was Mexico's decision to suspend its oil exports to the island. Cuba is now receiving almost no fuel.
The situation is dire for the Cuban population living on the island, who have been experiencing power cuts and fuel scarcity for months now. Ordinary Cubans will bear the brunt of the oil shortage, which will affect their access to healthcare, education, and daily living conditions. This is a path towards a humanitarian emergency fabricated by the United States.
Foreign policy has limits, and one of those limits is human rights. Once more, we deplore the Trump Administration's National Security Strategy and its attempts to impose its will in the Western Hemisphere, regardless of State sovereignty. The United States will be responsible for the consequences of this oil blockade on the Cuban people.
We call on the American People to reflect on the consequences of the U.S. foreign policy on the Cuban people. This is another action that results in forced migration. The international community has a role to play, and it is necessary that it raise its voice to prevent human suffering.
