Chicago, IL – Alianza Americas, a national network of more than 55 immigrant-led, community-based organizations in the United States, commends the Senate for approving the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act with overwhelming bipartisan support. The legislative proposal includes more than three dozen provisions to address housing needs. Families across the U.S., in rural communities, suburbs, and major cities, are struggling to make ends meet, and the rising costs of housing have only made it worse. It is estimated that there is a housing deficit of between 2.8 and 4 million homes. Even though fewer people are buying homes, prices and mortgage rates remain high. Young adults are postponing leaving their parents' home due to housing affordability.

The bill addresses affordability by including measures that limit large investors from buying single-family homes, allow more types of factory-built homes, make it easier to get loans to build multi-family housing, and allow federal grants to be used for new construction, among others. The bill now returns to the House of Representatives for final approval of the amendments approved in the Senate.

In an evermore polarized political context, bipartisan support for legislation is increasingly rare, underscoring the importance of swiftly advancing a bill that addresses a concern that polls show is a top priority for millions of people across the country: housing affordability. By working across party lines and upholding their sworn commitment to their constituents and their needs, legislators have gotten one step closer to delivering meaningful relief to the working class. In a time when politicians are often unable to agree on virtually anything, the Senate’s action demonstrates that lawmakers can still come together to deliver meaningful legislation. This should not only be recognized but also capitalized on.

The right to housing is a pillar of a dignified life. Addressing housing affordability is essential. Approving the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act in the House is a critical step. Alianza Americas urges Congress and the White House to prioritize solutions to the affordability crisis in this country.
