Midterm elections take place every four years, halfway through a presidential term. They determine who will serve in Congress during the second half of that term, influencing the president’s ability to implement their agenda through legislation. All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and nearly a third of the seats in the Senate are up for election this year, meaning the balance of power in either or both chambers can change.
The 2026 midterm elections come at a consequential moment. Significant changes have taken place in both domestic and foreign policy, affecting how we make ends meet, how we live, and how safe we feel.
As we know, who is in public office matters. Legislation is proposed and approved, including the federal budget. Congress allocates the revenues from taxes collected from all of us according to the priorities it sets. Senators also confirm key federal positions. Finally, both Senators and Representatives have oversight responsibilities; their actions are critical to ensure the federal government acts according to the law, ethically, and responsibly.
Only U.S. citizens older than 18 can vote in federal elections. Voting is the most important way citizens can make their voices heard on issues affecting them, their families, and their communities.
The 2026 elections offer an opportunity to help shape the policies and priorities that will affect immigrant communities.
