Caring for Society through Our Taxes
This Tax Day in the United States, our federal budget reflects a troubling reality: investments in military operations and enforcement continue to grow, while essential programs remain underfunded. President Donald Trump’s proposed 2027 budget makes these priorities clear. It calls for a 44% increase in federal spending to expand military operations, including the war in Iran, directing $1.5 trillion toward weapons. It also increases funding for immigration enforcement and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, in addition to the $190 billion already approved by Congress last summer. We believe our resources should reflect our values.
We believe public resources should reflect our values. We say no to war, and yes to care, dignity, and the well-being of our communities.
This Tax Day, we recognize the $97 billion that immigrants with irregular status contribute each year in federal, state, and local taxes. Immigrants strengthen our national and local economies and often pay into social programs they cannot access.
At the same time, critical programs such as healthcare, housing, and education face cuts, not because of a lack of resources, but because of policy choices that prioritize wealth concentration and militarization over people’s needs.
A safer and stronger society invests in its people. Immigrants are taxpayers, and we have the right to demand how our tax dollars are used.
This Tax Day, we call for an end to the economic exploitation of our communities. We call for bold investments in the programs and policies that allow all families to thrive.
