Know Your Rights: Here and There

Practical Guide for Before, During, and After a Deportation from the U.S. to Mexico

UPDATES:

For decades, U.S. immigration policies have criminalized migrants of Latin American origin living in the United States. Today, raids, arbitrary detentions, and express deportations without access to legal representation are leaving thousands of people—and their families—without protection or answers about what they will face upon arriving in Mexico. This exacerbates uncertainty, hinders family reunification, and violates their rights on both sides of the border.

Faced with this reality, Alianza Americas, in collaboration with the Research Institute for Human Mobility (InMovilidades) and the Institute for Women in Migration (IMUMI), developed the brochure "Know Your Rights in the Case of Immigration Detention": a useful, simple, and clear tool for support before, during, and after a deportation.

This guide offers key information on:

  • What to do if detained by ICE.
  • How to prepare a family plan.
  • What rights you have in the U.S. and Mexico.
  • What to expect at the repatriation centers.
  • Where to find help and support.

With this resource, we seek to empower our communities to make informed decisions, prepare for difficult scenarios, and strengthen their support networks. Knowing your rights can make the difference between uncertainty and organization, between abandonment and dignity.
