More than 100 organizations in the United States and Mexico, led by migrants and/or people who serve communities of Mexican migrants and returnees, sent a letter to the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to express our deep concern about the growing vulnerability faced by Mexican communities in the United States due to arbitrary detentions, mass deportations, and family separation.
In the letter to the president, the organizations warned about the impact of an increasingly hostile political and social context toward immigrants, fueled by ultranationalist rhetoric and anti-immigrant measures promoted by the Trump administration.
The undersigned organizations urgently call on the Government of Mexico to take an active and firm role in defending the rights and dignity of Mexican citizens abroad, demanding concrete measures that guarantee effective and humanitarian protection.
Our main demands:
“Despite the commitments expressed by the Mexican government, we have seen firsthand that consular protection services such as the PALE program are not functioning as they should,” the document states.
“Mexico cannot remain indifferent to the systematic violation of human rights and the lack of due process faced by thousands of its citizens,” the organizations stated. “Concrete actions and a budget that reflect that Mexicans abroad are a true priority for this government are required.”
Finally, the signatory organizations reiterate our willingness to work in coordination with the Mexican government to build solutions based on cooperation, shared responsibility, and respect for human rights.
