Chicago, IL — Alianza Americas with its 58 member organizations works to eliminate structural inequities that plague immigrants and people of Latin American origin in our nation, among others. This includes grave disparities in health care access, educational achievement and wealth and income distribution that impact living conditions and access to opportunities.

We stand in support of efforts to bring greater racial and ethnic diversity to our communities, schools and workplaces. As such we condemn the decision of the United States Supreme Court declaring that considerations of race in the admissions process in institutions of higher education are unconstitutional. The unequal distribution of access and resources that enables people’s well being perpetuates a system of privilege and exclusion. We must take all necessary steps to create pathways to opportunity and inclusion. Given our sad history of discrimination and exclusion, affirmative action remains a necessary tool to remedy systemic racism and discrimination, particularly in the field of higher education.

“The SCOTUS decision on affirmative action associated with admission practices in higher education institutions represents one more step backwards in the road towards justice for ethnic and racial minorities in the United States. Access to quality education has been one of the critical areas of systemic inequities in the U.S. that hold back and keep down ethnic and racial minorities. This decision clearly shows the lack of a truly inclusive mindset in most judges that make up the U.S. Supreme Court today.” said Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas. “We will continue to organize and advocate for the reinforcing and the creation of as many mechanisms as possible to overcome existing inequities,” he concluded.
