In his second State of the Union address, President Biden spoke on the progress of his economic plan, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, and the creation of more than 12 million jobs since taking office, among others. However, the President’s speech was a missed opportunity to highlight and recognize the contributions of immigrants of Latin American origin to the well-being of families and communities in the United States. In this regard, Oscar Chacon, Executive Director of Alianza Americas, issues the following statement:
“Migration has brought positive social, economic, and cultural benefits to our country- a country tackling an aging population, inflation, and a massive labor shortage- by bringing in hard-working, young immigrants, many of whom work as essential workers. Tonight, we expected a commitment from President Biden to establish and enforce laws that highly reflect the positive nature of our contributions to the country and to recognize that overcoming the struggles of our economy is directly tied to implementing humane and visionary immigration policy reforms. Tonight, the President missed an opportunity to address the toxic and xenophobic narratives that seek to spread hatred and lies-driven theories that have proven to harm our communities and our country as a whole.
We regret that the President continues to fail to address his promise to secure various immigration protections, including efforts to allow people who have lived for many years in the U.S., without enjoying immigration guarantees, to apply for permanent residency. We also regret that the president has not shown commitment in his international policy to promote economic transformations that would allow the vast majority of people in Caribbean and Latin American countries to achieve dignified living conditions, so that the factors that force us to emigrate, gradually disappear.”
Alianza Americas is the premier transnational advocacy network of Latin American migrant-led organizations working in the United States, across the Americas, and globally to create an inclusive, equitable and sustainable way of life for communities across North, Central and South America. In 2022, Alianza integrated with Presente.org, establishing a stronger digital organizing powerhouse.
