The celebration of International Human Rights Day is an opportunity to reiterate our conviction and commitment to the struggle for the rights and freedoms of all people. Today, we insist on the primary responsibility of states to guarantee the conditions and possibilities for the exercise and protection of the rights of all people.
As a network of 56 Latin American and Caribbean migrant organizations in the United States, we know firsthand the pain of flight and uprooting when human rights are not guaranteed and protected. Once again, we reaffirm our commitment to continue fighting to make migration a choice, not the only opportunity for safety and survival.
As Alianza Americas and partner organizations found in a recent report (titled Fleeing, not Migrating: Crisis in Central America), when it comes to migration from Central America in particular, people are not choosing to abandon their countries of origin: they are being forced to flee because of a toxic mix of violence, impunity, back-sliding democratic practices, and climate change disasters. Governments across the Americas, including the United States, must work in close collaboration to ensure there are appropriate public policies to deal with migration in a humanitarian way, addressing the root causes rather than emphasizing deterrence and deportation. (RSVP here to attend the virtual launch of Alianza Americas and partners’ new report on the root causes of migration from Central America).
The fight for human rights is the fight against forced migration. Alianza Americas will continue to work together with its member organizations for the respect and guarantee of the human rights of all migrants in their countries of origin, in those in transit, and in those who arrive in search of protection and dignified and safe opportunities.
