CHICAGO –– Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a $3.5 trillion budget resolution that includes funding for a pathway to permanent protections for immigrants, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, essential workers, and farm workers. Alianza Americas and applaud this development and encourage lawmakers to push for this budget to pass in its final form, as countless lives depend on it. The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and

“This budget resolution is a positive step toward providing a clear pathway to permanent protections for millions of immigrants in the United States. It’s about time Congress recognized the contributions that migrants make to this country. We are particularly proud of our efforts to push lawmakers to include a pathway to permanent protections in the budget resolution because we know that undocumented, Latinx, and other communities across the nation are often left behind as elected officials negotiate funding packages behind closed doors. As the Census proved, our nation has never been more diverse, and this budget resolution is just the beginning of the work that needs to be done to overhaul our broken immigration system. We will continue pushing for its final approval,” said Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas.

“As organizations committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable way of life for migrant communities living in the United States and across the Americas, we’ll continue to push Congress and the Biden administration to advance these crucial inclusions for immigrants in the final budget package. No community can be left behind as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic and years of delays in passing humane immigration policy. The time is now to support immigrants whose lives have been harmed and ignored for far too long,” said Matt Nelson, executive director of
