Chicago, IL Today, the Biden-Harris administration announced a plan for the Department of Health and Human Services to propose a rule expanding eligibility for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to enroll in health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicaid. In light of this news, below is a statement from Alianza Americas.

“We welcome this announcement from the Biden administration. DACA recipients deserve access to health care and social security; they are a vital part of our communities. Enabling them to have health care will translate into wellness for thousands of families and communities. DACA recipients and migrants in general are a blessing. Every day they contribute their labor and their taxes, and contribute to this nation’s ongoing function,” said Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas.

While this action was long overdue, we can’t forget that the Biden administration and Congress can do more. “The DACA program is under attack by racist and xenophobic forces seeking to end this relief. We need the Biden administration to permanently protect DACA recipients and recipients of other humanitarian programs such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and for leaders in Congress to move forward on fair and humane immigration reform that allows for the stability that these individuals and their families deserve,” added Chacón.
