CHICAGO –– Late today, the Biden-Harris administration announced that it would set a new refugee admission cap next month, after immigrant and refugee advocates denounced the administration’s earlier cowardly decision to maintain the 15,000 ceiling set by the prior administration, and accusing the Biden administration of breaking its promise to increase the cap this fiscal year.

“The U.S. refugee resettlement program is a signature program, reflective of our nation’s values of generosity and compassion. As organizations committed to creating an inclusive, equitable and sustainable way of life for migrant communities living in the United States and across the Americas, we will keep calling on the Biden-Harris administration to keep their promise to overturn all xenophobic, anti-immigrant, and white supremacist policies. We are glad the administration heard our calls and took swift action,” said Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas.

“As we’ve urged since Inauguration Day, the Biden-Harris administration needs to change policies as well as the narrative — by recognizing and elevating the tremendous contributions of migrants and refugees. We expect our leaders to act in ways that prioritize care, human rights, and dignity. The administration cannot align themselves with the cruel policies of previous presidents that prevented family reunification. Within hours, President Biden and his administration rescinded their decision because everyday people demanded that they do their job to build a democracy that works for all of us,” said Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.
