Organizations that defend the rights and dignity of people who migrate are facing a critical political moment. Over the last few years, U.S. asylum laws and norms have endured severe attacks, resulting in long-lasting damage. Meanwhile, the Biden White House has fallen short in delivering on campaign promises to build a humane system that welcomes and protects migrants.
In order to best meet this moment, grassroots organizations that defend migrant rights need to be more agile and better prepared to advocate for transformative change in digital spaces. The COVID-19 pandemic made evident the urgent need for organizations to be well-equipped and prepared to perform in this new virtual era.
In this context, Alianza Americas — a coalition of 55 migrant-led groups in some 14 states — is fully integrating Presente.org, the largest Latinx digital organizing group in the U.S., into its organizational structure. Alianza Americas and Presente are longtime collaborators in advocating for a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable way of life for Latinx and migrant communities living in the United States and across the Americas.
Over its twelve-year history, Presente has built up a deep capacity for digital and offline organizing, while achieving groundbreaking victories, through innovative and wide-reaching campaigns and partnerships. Integrating into Alianza Americas will mark a new chapter in digital and grassroots advocacy for and by migrant-led groups, advancing far-reaching efforts to mobilize coalitions who advocate around issues impacting Latinx and Latin American Immigrant communities.
“With Presente.org formally becoming an integrated platform of Alianza Americas, this means more sophisticated and powerful digital organizing, taking our mobilization of migrant and Latinx communities and other allies to the next level. We’re coming together to fight for greater equity, health, and freedom and justice for all in the U.S., and in migrants’ countries of origin,” said Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas.
“Indeed, 2022 will be a critical and necessary time to rebuild our societies with shared purpose and community, online and off-line. By fully integrating with Alianza Americas, we’re creating an innovative infrastructure for building powerful social movements. By working together, we will build up the social and political leadership of Latinx communities, build power transnationally and translocally, and leverage the power of our collective cultures and narratives,” said Matt Nelson, director of Presente and associate director for digital impact at Alianza Americas.
