Chicago, IL — November 7 marks one month since the attack by Hamas that killed 1,400 Israeli civilians and led to the kidnapping of around 240 people. Since then, the Israeli government has killed more than 10,000 people in Gaza, including more than 4,000 children. While we condemn the events that took place on October 7, we reject the argument that any act of violence justifies the collective punishment and alarming disregard for human life the world has witnessed for the past month. Alianza Americas joins thousands of people across the world demanding an immediate ceasefire to stop what human rights experts have called a “mass ethnic cleansing” of the Palestinian people.
The ongoing bombardment of the 25-mile-long Gaza Strip has displaced an estimated 1.4 million Palestinians. This is in addition to the 5.9 million Palestinian refugees who have been dispossessed over the last seven decades as a result of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory. As a network of Latin American migrant-led organizations working to create an equitable and sustainable way of life for migrant communities, our end goal is a world where individuals and families can live in safety, free from violence and terror, and thrive in their home countries. We also work to create a world in which migration is voluntary and not forced. Until then, we advocate for immigration policies that enable and welcome those seeking safety and freedom. Our liberation as a community of Latin American immigrants is inextricably linked to the freedom of all oppressed people across the globe.
Alianza Americas recognizes the leadership of those in congress who have used their power and platform to call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire and demand the rest of congress do the same. We applaud Jewish communities across the world who are bravely shouting “NOT IN OUR NAME” as they organize mass demonstrations in defense of Palestinian lives. We respect and thank all journalists risking their lives to report on the atrocities taking place in Gaza and condemn attempts to censor the right to access to information.
Lastly, we condemn the rise in anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, and xenophobic narratives that further incite violence against people who do not represent their government’s actions, such as the senseless killing of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year old Palestinian-American boy who was fatally stabbed by his landlord on October 14 in Illinois. We stand united for a safer and more dignified world and urge our leaders to commit to humanity and justice by supporting an immediate ceasefire.
Alianza Americas is the premier transnational advocacy network of Latin American migrant-led organizations working in the United States, across the Americas, and globally to create an inclusive, equitable and sustainable way of life for communities across North, Central and South America.
