Alianza Americas Condemns Horrific Anti-Semitic Violence in Pittsburgh- Calls for Halt to Hate-Mongering
Chicago—October 27, 2018— Today a gunman opened fire at Tree of Life Synagogue, a house of Jewish worship in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, killing at least 11 people, and injuring several more. This act of anti-semitic violence has horrified the nation. Alianza Americas stands in solidarity with the victims, and calls for reflection on the climate of hate, racist and xenophobic that seems to be motivating a wave of violent acts.
Oscar Chacón, Alianza Américas’ executive director, issued the following statement:
“Today we mourn yet another mass shooting in the United States. Innocents are dead, and we all are wounded by this act of violent anti-semitism. The twisted logic of the gunman appeared to target this house of worship in part because of the work of HIAS, an organization rooted in the Jewish faith, in resettling refugees. HIAS has a more than 100-year track record of welcoming those who come to our country seeking safety and freedom from persecution. In Pittsburgh, HIAS has made incalculable contributions to building the diverse and vibrant social fabric of the city.
On behalf of Latin American immigrant communities in the US, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and solidarity to the victims. We call for a cessation of the irresponsible hate-mongering emanating from our highest political offices, which emboldens those who would seek to justify violence against anyone perceived to be different. It is time for our nation to recommit to building understanding and harmony among all people who make us one nation and one human race.
