CHICAGO– The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas executive director, Oscar Chacón, and Presente.org executive director, Matt Nelson, on the electoral victory by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris, putting an end to the Trump Administration:
Matt Nelson, Presente.org’s Executive Director, explained:
“This has been a historic week in the United States, as we witnessed record-breaking voter turnout in this election, notwithstanding significant voter suppression efforts across the country and despite millions voting in the midst of the deadly coronavirus and the greatest economic crisis in a generation. The overwhelming will of the people has prevailed, and we are eager to move forward toward a rapid, peaceful transition of power and address the real, urgent issues impacting all marginalized communities, particularly Latinx, Indigenous, and Black communities.
The level of polarization in U.S. society is a symptom of how broken the status quo has been for decades, as well as the depth of the Trump administration’s allegiance to white supremacy. The progress achieved during the elections represents a golden opportunity to right the many wrongs that have caused millions of American families, of all races and ethnicities, to fear for their future. The conditions driving those fears have been skilfully manipulated to promote hate and prejudice against Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other ethnic and racial minorities, as well as other traditionally excluded groups in our society. The result of this election should be harnessed to bring about changes designed to restore faith in our democracy, and in the legitimacy of our representatives in government, so we can all work together towards a better United States of America.”
Oscar Chacón, Alianza Americas Executive Director, stated:
“The result of this election has made it clear that Latinx voters played a crucial role. In states across the nation, Latinx voters left a clear mark, showing how crucial their votes will be in the future. We have yet to see official numbers, but it is obvious to those of us who work with Latinx communities and voters that our participation is likely to have been record-breaking. Still, the nation remains extremely polarized. The close electoral results present us with an important set of challenges. We must take immediate action to address the many issues that have resulted in millions of people feeling so insecure about their future. But we must also condemn attempts to conflate and manipulate those fears with xenophobic tropes. We must lift up and celebrate the invaluable and positive contributions that people of Latinx origin have made in every aspect of our life.
People of Latinx origin harbor high hopes that a Biden presidency will roll back the extremist anti-immigrant, xenophobic, and misogynistic rhetoric that has emanated from the White House during the Trump presidency. The results of this election, particularly in terms of the popular vote, represent a win for immigrants, Black and LGBTQ communities, women, and others attacked by the Trump administration.
Although we now have a clearer picture of who the next president will be, we need to continue to protect the election by ensuring that all votes are counted, and to demand a peaceful transition of power. Today we celebrate that our democractic systems withstood constant attacks. We congratulate the incoming Biden/Harris administration on a historic win.”
Our work starts today. We must demand that incoming President Biden immediately undo harmful, anti-immigrant executive actions of the Trump administration and work with communities to ensure long-term protections”.
