San Salvador, June 1, 2019 — Today, El Salvador celebrates the inauguration of Nayib Bukele as President of the Republic (2019-2024). President Bukele takes office in a climate of hope that he may be able to move the country onto a new, more positive path. At this historic juncture, Oscar Chacón, Executive Director of Alianza Americas made the following statement:
“Alianza Americas congratulates the new president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, on this historic day. His election marks the end of the era of two-party governance in El Salvador. Mr. Bukele’s victory broke the pattern of two-party alternating political control between ARENA and the FMLN that had been in place for several decades. As migrant leaders in the United States, many of us with roots in Central America, we join in the hope of the electorate for a better future for El Salvador.
This moment could offer an unprecedented opportunity for political forces, the private sector, academia, and civil society to unite to provide the new government with the tools and space to seek creative solutions to the problems facing El Salvador and its people. We recognize that the country has structural challenges that can not be overcome immediately, problems that have expelled hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans who have not found opportunities, or who have had to flee to save their lives. Therefore, we urge the new president to work with determination and honesty to ensure that more Salvadorans are able to exercise their right to remain in their country, under conditions of dignity and safety. We also call on President Bukele to ensure that the rights of the many Salvadorans living abroad are respected and that those who seek protection abroad are able to receive it.
The member organizations of Alianza Americas, many of which were founded in the 1980s by Salvadoran immigrants and refugees, know El Salvador’s problems first-hand. Every day, these organizations work hard to provide legal and humanitarian assistance to Salvadorans in the US and to their families in El Salvador. We are an important part of the life of the country, and that is why we put ourselves at the disposal of the new authorities to work together on overcoming these challenges. As part of Salvadoran civil society, we are committed to playing an active role in creating new opportunities for El Salvador.”
Alianza Americas is a network of 50 immigrant-led organizations representing more than 100,000 families across the United States.
