CHICAGO –– Today, the U.S. Census Bureau released a second data disbursement of demographic data resulting from the 2020 Census count. The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org

“Today’s release from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals that our nation continues to move towards an ever more ethnic and racially diverse population. The growing demographic of Latinx communities proves that people of Latin American origin continue to drive our nation’s demographic well-being. As our nation diversifies, we’ll be challenged with how to best manage  this irreversible trend in a way that allows us to build national unity based on shared values of prosperity and sustainable progress. Our nation’s white supremacist roots impact many facets of our daily lives and as our nation transforms we’ll need people from Latin American origin, as well as other ethnic and racial minorities, to be at the center of every public policy decision to ensure the full inclusion of these communities as we move forward towards our collective well-being,” stated Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas

“The promise of the census is democratic representation and to fully realize our power. Demographic data released by the U.S. Census Bureau today illustrates a compelling moment for our nation and tells us that Latinx people must be better represented at every decision-making table across the country. We know that due to the failed attempts of the former Trump administration to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census and the COVID-19 pandemic challenges, we are sure to face another undercount. Despite this, we must make sure our communities hold power in government, the private sector, academia, the literary industry, and cultural institutions.” said Matt Nelson executive director of Presente.org.
