Health Disparities and Structural Inequities during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Public Analysis Session of the Alianza Americas’ 2020 National Leadership Assembly: Power and Solidarity for Transformation, that took place on October 16, 2020.

 

Black and Latinx communities have suffered a disproportionate impact throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. This impact is not only a result of health disparities, but also of many years of structural economic and social inequities, which continue to increase. In this critical session, the panel discussed these issues and also explored strategies to confront inequities and future challenges.

Yvette Calderón Chair of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital
Yvette Calderón is a Puerto Rican physician, raised on New York City. She received her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) in 1990 and completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at Jacobi Medical Center. She is a full-Professor of Emergency Medicine and was the Associate Dean for the Diversity Enhancement Office at the AECOM. For the past four years, she has the Chair of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. She is responsible for the daily operations and ensuring that efficient quality care is provided for over 82,000 patients yearly in the ED and over 1100 patient annually in Urgent Care.
Ricardo Castaneda
Ricardo Castaneda is a Salvadorean Economist, who graduated from the University of El Salvador. He has a Master’s degree in Government and Public Administration from the Pompeu Fabra University/IDEC, Barcelona and a Master in Mediatic Politics, Maps and Tools for a New Citizenship Culture from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He has been working at ICEFI since 2013 and is currently the country coordinator for El Salvador and Honduras. He has been a university professor. He has authored multiple investigations and collaborated on numerous studies, and he is a member for the Expert Network on Regional Integration of the Central American Integration System. He is also an opinion columnist.
Katya Nuques Executive Director of Enlace Chicago
Katy Gil is an activist for Honduran peoples’ rights through Casa Yurumein and the Honduran AIDS Organization in New York City, both organizations affiliated with Alianza Americas. Originally from the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, Katy worked in San Pedro Sula, Honduras at the Honduran Teacher Training Professional College (COLPROSUMAH). She also served as elected Secretary of Women's Affairs of the Honduran Workers’ Confederate Union (CUTH), one of the most important unions in the country. She moved to the United States and was granted political asylum due to threats she received as a result of her activism promoting human and labor rights. Katy has a Bachelor of Education and has been an educator throughout her life. She is working towards her master's degree in education at Baruch College in NYC. She is also a graduate of the 2018-2019 Alianza Americas Leadership Institute.
