CHICAGO—September 6, 2018—The Trump Administration today proposed a new rule that would allow immigrant families—children and parents—to be held indefinitely in detention facilities. The new policy would terminate the 1997 Flores Settlement, which limits the government’s ability to detain children for more than 20 days. Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas, issued the following statement in reaction to this change in the rules:
“There’s a reason that the Flores Agreement has been upheld for the last two decades by both Republican and Democratic Administrations: It reflects our country’s belief that families—especially children—seeking safety have basic rights to due process and should be treated with compassion.
Now, in stripping one of the last mechanisms that has stood to protect these migrant families and children, the Trump Administration has further advanced its heartless agenda to criminalize people who have undertaken a perilous journey fleeing for their lives.
The unconscionable events of this summer—the detention of asylum seekers, the caging of children, the irreversible trauma of family separation, and now, the reality that families could be detained indefinitely—are based on misguided fears and outright xenophobia. These measures unjustly punish families who are simply doing what anyone else seeking international safety would do. These families deserve protection and to be granted due process in the United States.
Alianza Americas continues to demand that the US federal government respect the rights of asylum seekers in the United States. Indefinitely caging families who have risked everything to seek safety is morally wrong and legally indefensible. We will work alongside allies and all people of conscience to protect migrant children and families all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States.”
